This morning she discovered a two-inch slug and named him
Spider. She quickly decided he was too brown and proceeded to color Spider with
green sidewalk chalk. Shortly after, she confessed the two were best friends. She picked a handful of weeds for her new accomplice to munch and declared today
his birthday. Then, she scooped him up and carried him to the swings.
Um, yes, at this point Spider was dead, rest in peace, slimy one.
As I sat on the porch and watched her three-year-old day
unfold, I thought about the opportunity we each have for daily celebration.
Yes, we celebrate when big things go
right, your kid makes the team and you get the job, but we also have the
opportunity to celebrate barking dogs, weed eaters
that hum, and slugs named Spider.

Questions for you: What opportunities will you embrace and celebrate today? Oh, and is it normal to find a dried-up worm in your child's bed? You know, hypothetically speaking, of course.

I'm smiling big too, I loved it. I love children. I love her outfit! :) OH, we have had dried up worms. . .never found them in the bed, but we have had them. They joys of children. . .I wouldn't mind going back to those days:)
Kristin,
Ahhh, yes, thank you for noticing the outfit. It's a little combo of three pairs of pajamas and one other random pink piece. Oh, and the cowboy boots, they are a must.
Whew, another family with dried up worms. Good. She sneaks them in the house and hides them!
Oh, she is adorable. Love that smile!! Thanks, Amy, for capturing the beauty of a moment -- helping us to not want to miss opportunities to see.
Love it!! What a precious reminder to take it all in. Blessings, Kristin
One of the many gifts we have learned from Nichole (who has down syndrome) is to celebrate all of life. All of it, yes, including the slugs, opening a new box of crackers, or getting the mail.
Thanks for the smile.
So precious. She is adorable. Thank you for simple joy, and a huge smile along with your mommas heart. Visiting from Lisa Jo's FMF. Great post.
Ha! This is so perfect. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to watch my son discover a slug. Of course, being a boy offers a different kind of curiosity, and instead of naming it and playing with it my son chose to run it over with his big wheel several times. The result though, that being a dead slug, was the same. I wish I could say my experience gave me a new insight as inspirational as yours, however I have failed to find such a lesson. ;)
love it-- love your blog too ;)
You are a funny funny woman....and yes, perfectly normal to find a dried up worm in your child's bed because I once heard of that happening to someone I live with. I mean someone I know.
I'm still getting over that she picked up a live slug. With her hands. I will be having nightmares for the rest of my life now. ;)
i love kids. i really do. happy summer break!
She looks so very happy. I love that.
Kids know how to appreciate and celebrate the little things - we all need to relearn that from them.
Love how you captured this moment. This reminds me of my daughter. She makes friends and semi-tortured lots of insects and frogs. Loved them to pieces. But oh the happy moments of childhood.
This makes me smile. I love how 3 year old days unfold. :)
:) love it
I so love little Ruby! She is such a nature lover. It's so fun to watch her grow. I have been celebrating my son's return to writing. He stopped for awhile, and I hid my disappointment because I didn't want him to feel pressured. He's back at it again, which makes me smile. Also, my girl is singing her heart out right now as I type this. That's worth celebrating :)
