On That Little Bird and Shouting Agendas

As you know, technology and I aren’t exactly good buds.

Sure, DVR proves useful when I know I’ll be out, and I want to watch Claire act neurotic as she tries to parent her children.

And I find FaceTime magical and a little Jetson-like, but totally useful since my family is far away.

And for crying out loud, I post on this blog, which means I met you, and the fact is, I like you, as in a lot, a lot.

However, I struggle with social media because I feel as if there are already so many people shouting agendas, yelling about posts, screaming the benefits or contests, and hosting online parties. Plus, I ask myself, do I want to add my noise to all of that clamor, and people, does anyone really care?

Plus, there’s the issue that I ache for slow, and posting witty tweets and reading countless retweets doesn’t exactly sound peaceful.

Oh, and there’s the fact that I tend to be a smidge elitist, and if “everyone’s doing it, “ I refuse.

But that brings me to last week. I missed some serious opportunities because I turn my back on social media, and it kind of feels as if I soaked up too much sun and one of my sisters came up from behind and smacked me on the back, hard. Ouch.

Therefore, bring on the bird.

I joined Twitter. Don’t expect me to embrace it. In fact, plan on me acting like the pouty kid in the back of the class until I figure out what the heck a hashtag is.

Oh, and if you happen to be on Twitter, I’d love for you to find me. So we can peek at what each other says in 140 characters or less (Serisouly, I don't even know if I created that link right. Someone tell me how to fix it if I'm wrong!).

Oh, and now that I’m practically a social media guru, you should know that I’m also on Google +. Yep, I don’t have much to say there either, but I’m working on that one too.

Oh, and don’t bother asking about Facebook. A girl can only handle so many social media outlets, and at this time, I find myself maxed out.

Questions for you: Let’s discuss Google + and Twitter. Love them? Hate them? Advice on either. Come on, I need it.

I was so excited to Tweet! And now I haven't tweeted in months. It is a time issue - would love to hear how others make it all work when you're pressed for time.

The enemies of God and of everything that is true, pure, lovely, and of good report have no qualms about using social media to advance their agenda. I figure that if God is in the business of making all things new, that includes technology. I say, use it for His kingdom and to thwart the purposes of evildoers.

And, welcome to Twitter. I'm going to go follow you around there now.

I'm on Google+, too. But I rarely go there.

I'm lost in twitter and google + land, although I'm signed up for both...I'll look to you to figure them out of me :)

I use twitter all the time. I mostly follow my pastors and some friends and just some random twitter accounts that I like. :) Google + I created twice and deleted it both times. No one is on there, and it doesn't seem to be catching on. Which sucks since I waited more than 3 months on their list to get on that site.

um, yeah. twitter. i found you. i followed you. i even left you a reply to your first tweet. . . somehow thinking that reply would show up on your wally thing? (what IS it called on twitter???)
anyway, yeah, that reply is on MY page, not yours. . . so how in the world do you even KNOW i replied to you???
ya see, these are the mysteries of twitter that make me feel old. incredibly, horribly old. i should just stick to tweeting my blog posts and leave it at that.
but then again, there's something in me that wants to conquer the thing. . . :-)

My blog posts are automatically tweeted to my feed, but I have to make myself engage on twitter. It's hard and I don't really like it. I read others' tweets, but rarely tweet myself. BUT, we do live in a social media world and although I don't like it, it is another way to stay connected and informed, as well as to put myself out there a little more (Also hard!)

maybe because of my age...I am a bit of a dinosaur...I don't have facebook...but I do know how to stalk...I don't tweet...I just started this thing called the blog world not too long ago...I will never say never...but this old dog may just be too old to tweet:)
Blessings as you tweet and sing:)

I rarely go to Google+ and I have not jumped on Twitter. If I do, I'll totally follow you. Maybe I'll get on Twitter when you get on FB? Deal?

I'm on Facebook and go in phases. Sometimes I'll go weeks without checking anything, then I'll be on there every hour for 2 days straight. I'm on Google+, but not many of my friends are active on there, so it's pretty dead. I'm not on Twitter. I just know it would be another time sucker and distractor, and I don't need that. Honestly, I don't know what I'd Tweet and to whom I would Tweet it. LOL! I added Pinterest to my list, and that can be a big time sucker as well. What did our moms do all day? Knit socks? LOL!

Join facebook. I need another friend.

Meh. I'm mostly indifferent. Facebook is annoying mostly, but some of my family is only on there. Gosh, if I didn't connect with them through facebook, I'd have to... I don't know, call them or something. Twitter, well, I'm getting used to... sort of. And Google +, well, I'm ignoring that for now. Good luck!

On Twitter, I just tweet my blog posts (other than the message I just sent you :)

Great post Amy. I totally get you about the Google+ thing. I can't figure it out. I have a twitter account, but I don't have a smartphone. Who in their right mind would have a twitter acct. without the proper type of phone? Yours truly. :) But I use all the social media thinga-majigy's for the advancement of His Kingdom! I love how all the women here have been connected by our Father's hand thru social media! The Gospel is being preached to the four corners of the earth as we all gather together and write what He has put on our hearts. He'll part our Red 'technical' Sea! Glad to get connected to you!
Blessings,

I've been thinking a lot about twitter but not for blogging. My hang up is what cool name should I use?!! If my handle is words of wisdom, then twitter is great, but if all I'm doing is reading, reading, reading them, why bother. Oh the conundrum! If I finally take the plunge, I will gladly come find you. Good luck and when you figure it out please put a blog up and give lessons for the rest of us.

I have been on twitter for ever and LOVE it (I am @multitaskingme) but Google + baffles me. The double edged sword of social media ;)

I have a Twitter account and even though I've never Tweeted a single peep I have followers - how does that happen? I don't really get Twitter.
I love FB and keep my privacy settings high so I can post 'hilarious things my children say/do' without my 14-year old knowing (we're not FB friends - the mortification would be too much) :)

Personally, I prefer Facebook - by far - to Twitter. That could just be me! I like the messaging system, for private conversations and I just prefer the look and feel of it (even though they do keep changing it up on us!) I've had a twitter account for about a year and basically just use it to tweet my blog posts. Occasionally I'll get in a brief conversation with someone, but I find it WAY too time consuming. I'm following you now, though. :>)

OOOO! Anderson did his entire show on this today! (Liz watches him b/c she thinks he's hawt!)
I guess now I am the only twit left who doesn't Tweet, FB, Text!
Great rule of thumb: NEVER put on the WWW anything you'd be ashamed for your Mom or child to read. (this means you are safe dear friend!) Love!!

I'm worse! I don't tweet and I don't even know what google+ means. Will you tell me?

I'm still learning how to post links into my blog. . .I'm REALLY slow with all of this!

I'm with Kristin. I don't tweet and I don't know what Google+ is. I can barely keep up with Facebook!

Nice to meet you, social media hold out :) I've been holding out longer, though.. b/c I still don't tweet or FB... my husband says the same thing many of your readers have- God can use social media for good. I'm thinking about that- may need to take the jump. Love your post- sounds like someone took my own internal struggle and copied it on your blog page :) Happy tweeting! If I ever join the blue bird wagon, I'll look you up!

I love it -- so many bloggers that are social media hold-outs like me!! Good to know. But sorry...can't help much.

I'm so excited to see you on Twitter, see the reason is that you have all these great connections for charity work and just seeing a tweet about bras reminds me I DO have some I thought about donating but thought it might be tacky :( so glad you posted this so I know what to do with them! See you're doing it right! Put out those opportunities and let God put eyeballs in front of them.

Hi Amy,
Just last year, I was not a fan of social media. Now I think I get it. I'm still not a fan of FB. I'm on, but don't use it much. I really like Twitter, though. Probably because with limited characters, it has to be to the point (which I like). I haven't done anything with Google+.

This probably isn't all that helpful, but just my opinions. Btw, I just followed you on Twitter. :)

Blessings,
Laura

I don't have a clue about Google +, so can't help you at all there, but am on Twitter. But I've often thought the same thing you have, as in there are so many people out there with blogs and agendas and contests through all kinds of social media... where does my voice fit in? Should I try? So... will look for you on twitter. :)

Look at you all grown up and learning such BIG things...and joining twitter to boot! Now I've seen everything;}

I am constantly amazed at the scandalous grace He gives washing over my BIG and little mishaps...we'll never get enough and He'll never get tired of giving it as we learn the deepest lessons slowly...
