When You Find God in Surprising Places

Sometimes I think God waits in places that smell of bleach and Hamburger Helper. Places that house women in red, fuzzy slippers and children in sleeveless pajamas.

Beyond banging doors and crackly announcements, God sits in an uncomfortable, kitchen chair that rocks, but isn’t supposed to, and He nods.

He sees dreadlocks and hears pleas.

And as prayers for new beginnings are hurled into the air, He marvels at the change, not in circumstances, but in hearts.

Went somewhere new this week, and thought I’d share. Also, linking with Emily at Imperfect Prose.

Question for you: Tell me where you've found God this week. Anywhere surprising?

Amy, thank you for this. I can really relate, especially this week when I found Him in the laundry.

just yesterday i found Him in the bathroom. all that surprising? nope. not anymore. i seem to be finding Him in the most unlikely places these days. . . . .or maybe i'm just looking a little more carefully.

Yes, yes, yes! In the car, in the bathroom, in the middle of a crowded room. The more unexpected, the more memorable the encounter.

Good insight Amy.

My random spot for God was at my son's basketball game. I am working on a post on it--I'd see God's hand more often if I would slow down and open my eyes.

monday night i was chasing a runaway...and the only way he would talk is through text, but it was something a 'stoner' friend said to him that turned him around...

Oh, Amy. You are right where you need to be. This has been our pastor's message for weeks and weeks and I often think of Bono's quote about Jesus being in the orphanages, etc....

I found Him in my new neighbors that haven't quite moved in just yet. I found Him in my child's meltdown that I had no clue how to handle. He is in every difficult situation that I'm usually trying like crazy to run away from.

Thank you for this amazing post.

Hmmm... made me hungry for a change in my heart, knowing the circumstances are static. Thank you.

It is amazing, Amy, how you can say so much with such depth in so few words...maybe, you're also a poet :) I see God in the tree stripped bare of leaves and am reminded of how He empties Himself for love/me/us. Bless you!

I found him as I was holding my child. :)

I love our surprising God. I call them serendipity moments and giggling will say to Him, "Gotcha!"

Where did He surprise me this week? At my spiritual direction group and the wisdom I heard from the others in that group I knew had to come from God. So in the community of our brothers and sisters.

So true, Amy. Loved your thoughtful words!
This week, God showed up while I was washing dishes. My dishwasher died this last weekend and you know, I'm not even missing it! I'm enjoying the company as my hands wrinkle.... ;)

God was the passenger in my SUV as I had one hour till volunteering at school and a list as long as Santa's to get done. Praise God, which is what I did, it all got done.

Me too girl! However, I have to remind myself of that truth on a regular basis.

In glitter. As I attempted to renew an old, worn pair of shoes with modpodge and glitter, I was reminded how He's able to transform something worn into something beautiful.

So glad to meet you too, Amy.

Amy, I love this post. I love how we find God in ordinary and surprising places. For me, it's often when I'm doing the dishes, or folding laundry or doing something so mundane. I love how He finds us where we are.

I always love my visits here. You're a beautiful writer.

Amy, love this post. Thanks for stopping by my place. I found God today when my pen found the pages of my journal.

I found Him in facing frustration. He was waiting on the other side with peace . . surprise!

I have to admit, that I don't look for God on a regular basis in my world. I believe in fates and a higher spirit that protects those when they need it most. I think for me, sometimes the official title is too linked to buildings that just don't mean enough to me. That being said, this year I put a prayer of sorts out to the universe for some help with a new direction in my life. As close as I come to new year's resolutions I suppose. Anyway, at the tender beginning of the year, it seems to be shimmering into existence and for that I give thanks to the cosmos (and maybe your God's hand too)

Thank you so much for your kind words on my page Amy.

Too long to leave here, but these cold January days bring me back to a day when I found God, dressed in rags on a bench outside a grocery store.

I found God at Gap Outlet and Kohls' as I asked His help to build a new wardrobe for an upcoming trip ... on a small budget. Wow ... found amazing deals and clothes that fit.

Fondly,
