This and That

Sometimes we have This and That for dinner. This and That is a combination of good things that don’t really go together. The same concept applies to today's post, but I promise this post is better than waffles and green beans (A real example of a This and That dinner at our house).

*******************

I know you long for simple.

I feel it in your posts, see it in your comments, and read it in your email, but with fall already showing it’s fabulous colors, the season of stuff is upon us. Struggling with this fight of accumulating more of things?

Me too.

Thankfully, Megan’s article over at Simple Mom laid out some practical ways to focus on the fun and not gifts. Sure, Megan talks about birthdays, but the same ideas apply to all kinds of holiday fun.

Want a peek? Go here.

**********************

People continue to scream about being a social media expert and all of the things you must do to promote your message and yourself (eek, I hate that).

I knew I liked that guy.

*********************

I’m reading Death by Suburb, (reccommended by her). It talks about finding God when we look beyond perfectly cut lawns, SUV’s, and soccer awards.

One of the author's, David L. Goetz’s, first bits of advice is to forget about that peaceful, log cabin in the woods when you think about connecting with God. You need to search out God right here in your life right now.

That's hard for me. I always think I will make time for God when I get home or when my girls are quiet or when I'm not busy preparing green beans and waffles, but I need to make time in the now.

Even if the now happens to be a smidge crazy.

Question for you: The idea of simple fun, social media, and Death by Suburb. These good but random topics are a perfect combination of This and That. Tell me a little This and That from your life, or tell me I'm not the only person who serves my family waffles and green beans.

Happy Wednesday, friends.

In England they put corn on pizza . . . so green beans and waffles, isn't that different.:-)

Fondly,

well. . . i've served some odd stuff. but green beans and waffles? i'll leave that to you and your family :-) i understand the need to throw some veggies in there with the waffles, though :-)
this & that: trying to purge to create more "simple" space, get my life a bit more organized, all the while trying to homeschool four kiddos and mastering the Latin language which really isn't a foreign language but an exercise in logic (who knew???). oy vey. and reading a lot about how to cut the food budget without extreme couponing (which i'm horrible at) while still allowing my children to eat three meals a day (which they continue to demand--selfish, eh?). AND keeping it all perspective and loving God first and best. how's that for this & that?

You are the only person who serves waffles and green beans. Seriously, you are. Just speaking the truth in love, that's all. And you know I'm kidding! I love it...gotta get that vege in right? Ha! How about Captain Crunch and organic carrots. That's a nice This and That and something we've done before.
Off to go check out your friend on simple....

A little of this:

Finishing up my 1st half of school (while working full time) - and looks like I"ll have an A and a B in my classes. Yay!

A little of that:

Contemplating some major changes in our family that scare me to death, but excite me all at the same time. One facet of that is my seriously considering writing a non-fiction book. Eeeeeek!

Love you. xxx

Okay, Amy, I had to laugh at this: "forget about that peaceful, log cabin in the woods when you think about connecting with God." Because I'm sitting in my very own log cabin in the woods.

And trust n believe, Sister, He ain't here any more than He's anywhere else. Also, it's very chaotic up in here. Wonderpets and Poptart snacks.

Can you friend request me on fb? I can't find you, and I've actually tried.

For some reason, when I was in college I found myself repeatedly eating yogurt while drinking a beer. Trust me, it's a this and that combination that shouldn't be attempted. Anyway. The cabin in the woods thing--I'm working on a women's Sunday school class for my church, something along the lines of making space in your life to draw near to God wherever you are. I think we need to be kind to one another (and ourselves) and recognize that that may look very different for each of us at different times in our lives.

We are regulars with this and that here as well Amy.

I like what Jon Acuff said (sorry but I could not get the link to work). I always attach being genuine with social media--if there is an alternative motivation people will detect it quickly and avoid the effort.

Never done green beans and waffles, but hooray for your kids for eating that combination!

I've been struggling with the social media thing and I really like this quote you have given me. I think God has asked me to let Him promote His Words on my blog and in the SDG community. I try (try!) to go where He tells me and then let Him take over the rest.

Ya know, I am so guilty of saying I don't have the right space and time to get with God as often as I want to. I have this grand idea of what I need to really spend good time with Him... but it keeps me from getting there. I love what you said... I need to just get with Him in the now. Thanks for this reminder. And I also love what Jon Acuff said about social media... it reminds me that social media would have us thinking that there is something "we" can do to push our cause for Christ when really it's HIM that makes it happen! A movement with soul is moving with Christ :) Love your "this and that" post... and, um we just have the waffles over here and skip the green beans all together... so bad!

Right now, dinner at our house is called Whatever You Can Find.

I'm actually tired of people calling themselves experts in any field. The noise from everyone tooting their own horns gets deafening sometimes.

I feel God, right here in my home. I'm still trying to learn to understand what He is telling me, though.

Dearest Amy, thank for this and that. My kitchen should have "that" as its motto! Our youngest is a picky eater, so many nights we have pancakes with fish (I am hearing groans out there) and many other nasty-sounding combos. But it works for us. And this chick is at a place where Peace and Hope reign over perfection and how-to manuals. Not to say that those 2 and a host of their fiends/friends won't be knocking at the door around 4:30 when the family is crabby and I can't find the pancake mix (or we are out of eggs - it happens).

Loving your green beans and waffles combo - that would be a hit in our house!

Melody,
Captain Crunch and carrots? I am so there.

Brandee,
I did not know you lived in a log cabin, and I love what you say about living there. Countless times I have thought, "Oh, if I could just get away from everything and live in a log cabin for a couple years, I could....(fill in the blank).

Nancy,
Yogurt and beer? Holy, cow, not a chance. That's a crazy combo.

Amy Sullivan said...

Slamdunk,
You are right. I really feel as if you can just tell that some people are sincere. It just seems through everything they write.

Amy Sullivan said...

JF,
I love that you aren't into social media...it makes me feel less guilty. Plus, the way you use your blog. You are listening to God. Hey, I have an idea, you should teach a class on that. Ha!

Amy Sullivan said...

Carolyn,
Your dinner sounds like dinner at my house growing-up. At least once a week we had "Fend". Yep, you know what that means, go get whatever you can find yourself. My kids are too young now, but I am totally serving Fend.

Amy Sullivan said...

Michele,
Yes siree, nastiest combo mentioned. Pancakes and fish? Really? I almost want to send your cards some kind of sympathy card (or a meal in the mail).

No, good for you for letting go of perfectionism.

Amy, you sound like a ton of fun! I'm a freshman to the blogging thing~ digging the new connections. You mentioned on my post about high levels of annoyance at people in your life??? Tough stuff to sort out~ vacation or a trip to the spa seems to help me. On the more serious side, I like your reminder to seek God where we are and not necessarily wait for the "right" setting.

in Hungary they put corn on pizza too...usually with ham:} but waffles and green beans well you made me smile and I rather like a combination that makes me smile:}

i loved that social media quote by Jon Acuff though I didn't know him before;} well here between moving and writing about His heart and everyone sick, kids better now, but it's hitting me and feeling a little discouraged about all of it but energized to be back on-line and have more space and wanting to start shopping at Aldi's in the am but the way I feel RIGHT NOW makes me think it ain't happening and excited I GET TO GO TO RELEVANT and I think you are laughing or a tad annoyed {never, i know;} at the rambling...takes one to know one;}

praying for YOU!!!

Hey Amy! I actually blogged today! :-) I love what you said about finding God where you are. In Bible study this week we were talking about prayer and how most of us don't do it enough. One of our great faith warriors said she thought our entire lives were a prayer to God. When she asked if I agreed I told her that I indeed thought HER life was lived as a prayer to God, but I'm not so sure about mine!! :-)

To Glenda, I love corn on my pizza. And, I've been feeding my boys Cheese Nips and Cheerios for breakfast. So, I'm there on the This and That!!

Yes. we need soul. Like that. And I need to forget about that log cabin. It's just not in the plans!

Going to check out that book. Just LOVE the title.
