Step 1: Get in your car and belt out words to songs she likes (fine, you like them too, but just a little, and you refuse to admit it).
Step 2: Pass strip malls, and try to forget about your Kohl’s Cash that expires soon.
Step 3: Arrive at your destination, Manna Foodbank.
Step 4: Survey the job.
Step 5: Scoop loads of stewed tomatoes but very few cans of fruit out of a giant cardboard box. Create three-day, emergency, supply boxes for families in Western North Carolina.
Step 6: Engage in real conversation about whether she should toss her chewing gum collection and instead just focus on collecting Dum, Dum wrappers.
Question for you: What are some of your favorite ways to spend quality time with your kids?

Hey, did you notice the new cool cause link on your right? This week’s cool cause Kiva. You choose a borrower, make a loan for as little as $25.00, get repaid, and then repeat. Kiva lends money to borrowers so they may start a business or project of their own and create better lives for themselves. Thanks for the lead, Nancy. Also, if you find a cool cause you'd like me to highlight, email me the link.

Hi Amy, thanks for linking up at the weekend blog hop. Following you back. Hope you come around next weekend.
Hi thanks for the lovely comment on my blog, following back.
sounds like a great day we spent 5 hours around 5 parks today and shes still not tired :)
My favorite times right now, while she is only five, is to let her read to me when she makes me lay down and pretend I'm taking a nap and she is reading me a good night story. I love the cuddling and the reading.
Oh, Gaby,
Pretend napping is big fun at our house right now too.
you do the best stuff with your kids! something i love a lot is riding in the car with my kids. hank has his license, which means he doesn't ride in with me in teh mornings anymore. so this weekend, i drove him to his baseball tournament. i loved this time with him.
Thank you Amy for visiting my blog, so I could discover yours! I love Mother, Daughter dates. I don't get to spend one-on-one time with my oldest daughter as much as I'd like to, because my two-year-old daughter is always with us. But we do get some time alone to talk. Awhile back I blogged about conversations a mother and daughter should have (it as a series based on a book I read), and I'd love to know your thoughts on it. http://zookbooknook.blogspot.com/2008/04/my-publications.html
My girls are still so young, but I want to build a good foundation with conversations so that when we do get more mother-daughter dates in the future the time together will be really helpful for my daughter.
My girl loves to play a part in our annual activity. It's a kind of ritual in our household to prepare cards and gifts for teachers on Teacher's Day eve.
One or two days before the day, I would drive her around hunting for cards, wrapping papers as well as gifts for the 20 odd teachers in her school. Sometimes, we took hours to create personalised cards for each teacher.
In the process, stories and life experiences would be shared and imparted ...
Pretending napping is also a favorite at our house.
What an awesome date, I love it! We have a place similiar here called Hope House where boxes are filled with food for needy families, also gives away clothing, shoes, etc.
I love it when my son helps me volunteer and sometimes we just go out for lunch. I love any of this because we have to drive 30 minutes to get anywhere from our house and we've had some of the best conversations in the car and some of our silliest times with much laughter. Those car rides are the best! :)
Look at those two beautiful girls. Two of my favorites :) I love that you are so intentional with your girls. She will remember this, Amy. You are making a difference by living what you believe. I love it. And, that's a great idea with the new cause each week. I like it!
Serving God by serving other people always makes for the most amazing way to spend a day with your daughter. Thanks for reminding me...
K,
Can't wait to have you here at my place later this week. I think people will really enjoy your post.
Lor,
Glad you like the new cause every week because you know you will be the one helping me finding these!
Ok, this is going to sound nerdy but I'll risk it....we like going to the library with a character doll. Today we took Madeline and read some Madeline books together. Sophie loved this. Although I made the mistake of telling her that when we read the Madeline book out loud that her doll would come alive. I know, I know...just plain stupid!!! Anyways, she looked at me upon my reading of the last word of the Madeline book and rolled her eyes in disgust at the fact that her doll did not come alive. So that was my failed attempt at a great mother daughter bonding time. Ha! Live and learn. :)
Love the picture of you and your daughter! What a sweet way to spend time together.
Such a great picture of you two! You always do the most wonderful things with your kids. Some of my favorite times with my kids involve getting alone with each one of them and just talking about things that matter to them - letting them lead the conversation. I find out so much more that way.
You are such a good Mom!
Melody,
You make me laugh.
I need to hear more about these character days, not because it's dorky, and I want to make fun of you, but because I just want to make sure I'm getting a real picture in my head.
Are we talking Curious George? Paddington?
Sweet Sophie, she has no idea how fun her mom really is.
Quality time with the kids that has been fruitful as of late is laying in bed with them before sleep and hearing all the things they forgot to tell me during the day. Oh, and them asking me to pray for them is priceless. They don't let me forget anymore.
And are you saying that I shouldn't announce that I have Justin Beiber on my running playlist? Because I heart Justin Beiber...
No, not Paddington and Curious George! We're talking real character dolls that talk and walk around and yell things like "Have Integrity" and "Be honest" and stuff like that. Ha! I'm kidding. Yes, you're actually right....just lame characters off tv like Paddington and Curious George. Actually we're showing our age when we spout off characters like that...now it'd have to be getting a Sponge Bob or Phenias & Ferb doll. Do you remember Madeline though?....blue coat and yellow hat girl...books based in Paris. Yeah, that Madeline. But she did NOT come alive much to Sophie's dismay. And aren't we glad. That would just creep us all out.
This is why I love your blog. I can actually picture myself doing this with my daughter. I think I just might.
You and your daughter are so lovely! This was a great "date" idea...developing a heart for others in your daughter.
This was wonderful, Amy! What a fantastic idea!
I love laying in bed with them at night and hearing about their day - there is just something about that time that brings everything out.
Okay, the music makes me laugh, because that is how it goes in our car! :) The best thing I can do in her eyes is put it on radioDisney and leave it. Then she laughs as I sing along to the songs with her. :)
What a great idea!
Great plan! Your comment about the Kohls cash expiring cracked me up. I had a simiar choice this weekend and the Kohls cash lost. Sigh.
I love how you serve the community with your kids! You've got a beautiful heart!
Mel
Dum Dum wrappers vs. chewing gum collection.
A conversation about candy, but really so much more.
I love this.
Because you made her know she matters...her thoughts carry weight.
So many times I make the wrong choice--and mentally-roll-my-eyes at another disussion about Webkinz room decor.
But I've lost an opportunity to connect. Missed her reaching out to be known. Makes me want to weep when I realize what I've really done.
But you caught the moment.
I love this Amy :)
Love this!
What a great date :) And as for the Kohl's cash...mine usually expires. I'm sure they count on people like me Haha :)
I love this! What a great way to spend time with your daughter.
