Get Up and Serve The World Ideas

Are you overwhelmed by the needs of the world? Read on, and discover practical ways to get involved.

1. Buy a map. Find Cameroon, Andorra, or maybe even Clipperton Island.

2. Attend a talk on an issue facing the world, and walk away a little smarter.

3. Investigate Kiva. Loaning $25.00 can change someone's life.

4.  Sponsor a child through Compassion, World Vision, or Feed the Hungry. Then, don't just send a monthly check, write to your new friend.

5. Read a book that encourages deep thought and fast action. Have you read Enough by Roger Thurow?  Big ideas on world hunger.

6. Love a missionary. Need one to chose from? Follow her story or maybe even hers.

7.  Learn facts about water, and then decide to have your family act, even in a small way.

8. Watch a documentary about life in another part of the world. My friend says this is a must.

9. Start a change jar, and let your child pick a global cause.

10. Support bloggers for birth kits and help give moms the supplies they need to deliver babies.

How do you teach your kids about the world around them? Books? Movies? Talks? Travel? News? Tell me. Tell me.

Abby has just started reading the headlines on the morning paper. Of course, she has questions, so I try to answer them in a way that shows her a way to pray instead of a way to fear.

Jen,
Great idea, headlines offer a little peek into the whole article.

These are great!

We sponsor a child through compassion and one through Hopes Promise with our church. I have had all four children with me serving at soup kitchens and we have a missionary family we pray for. We've talked about our world and surrounding, too. It doesn't seem enough. Somehow, I still feel too far removed.

i love how you don't just talk about doing stuff, amy. you actually post practical stuff, that won't break the bank, and that just about anyone could do. it's very motivating! thanks for the great suggestions.

Thanks, Steph,
I used to let myself become discouraged. . .the world was too big, and let's face it, I'm pretty small. Now, I'm embracing the little ways we can all make an impact

So much good here, Amy. I DO feel overwhelmed-even though we help in some of the ways you mention. I like what you say about embracing the little ways. The best thing I can do is pray. And teach my boys to. And now? I'm breaking out the map.

Hooray for Kiva! Keep putting this stuff in front of us, Amy. You encourage us all to do good.

Amy, your gifted teacherish/practical mind is a great blessing. You break the information down into doable actions. Then you throw in passion. Just what we need.

Thanks,
Glenda

Thank you for a very practical way to get up and serve. We sponsor a compassion child, but I long to do more. Thank you for sharing! You inspire me every time!

Love your list. Thank you for some more ideas! We sponsor a child and pray for him every night and send him letters.

It's important for me to remember to give even when I'm facing hard times myself. There is always someone going through harder times, always :)

I love this whole idea of your family journeying together to become less selfish. It makes me wish mine were younger. I still have me, and you inspire me to live a life where Christ shines through. Thanks!
