I spy on them through the study window. Tiny, dirt-caked legs racing. They search for worms and rocks and treasures. One pantless and the other clothed in mismatched pajamas.
The tiny one carries a Ziploc baggy full of water, and the oldest totes a steak knife. Hmm. They place both objects on the red, lawn chair (whew!) and board the swings.
Little legs pump and loud voices screech out round after round of “Happy Birthday”.
Excellent song, even if your birthday is seven months away.
The ordinary arts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest. —Thomas More

Celebrating the simple with Cheryl, and reminding myself to listen when I hear the good stuff with Michelle.

I love that quote, and the picture is pure sweetness!
Let our adventures and love be childlike, unquestioning and totally reaching out to enjoy life. Great story here!
LOVE that Thomas More quote!! And how I love the "ordinary arts we practice everyday"...
Sounds like a great week at your house!
Yes, yes, yes. Great quote, and fab day at my house.
Delightful moment, Amy. Thank you for sharing.
I used that Thomas Moore quote at my place -- I love, love it. And yes, listening in...so important. And so often something I don't do. A timely reminder for me, Amy. He speaks through them.
It is always a good time for Happy Birthday! We sing it while we brush teeth, wash hands, etc. and we sing it to all kinds of inanimate objects like shoes, dishes, etc. Great picture!
This kinda goes with the revelation that maybe I should spend time with my husband as a way of de-stressing my life.
Jen,
Time with husband to destess? I always feel less stressed when I block out the world and get some QT with the husband. Hope you guys are able to steal some soon!
So very sweet!! Kids digging with steak knives and shouting songs...love those munchkin moments:)
Kids are amazing, aren't they?
I love that Merton quote. Encouraging and challenging.

Ah, I love this. My kids were digging for worms yesterday. Dirt-caked legs are priceless.
Amy, visiting via Cheryl... I love this post!! It brought a huge smile to my face. Yes, the simple things and seemingly ordinary... but not so ordinary when filled with love.
Love that quote... beautiful day.. Hope you are all well in the Carolinas...saw the devestation there and prayed for you. ;)
what a great post! love the picture and the sweet words ...
Alicia,
Thanks for your prayers. We are well here. The mountains usually protect us. However, there is great devestation not to far away. So much loss. . .
I, too, love that quote. The steak knife? I have a story about a steak knife in a bag taken to Awanas...we can laugh about it now.
Dirt-caked legs, pantless and mismatched pajamas. Sounds like things of beauty to me!
Perfect quote, too, by the way, when I think of simplicity.
