Christ Through a Medicine Man?

Photobucket

Running from my world, I ended up on a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico.

I hoped six months of teaching in a desolate section of the Four Corners would give me perspective. However, I learned after six hours in an empty boarding school that silence, especially the haunting kind, isn’t always good for perspective.

U2 front man, Bono said something once about Christians making him feel “itchy”. I understood that feeling; uncomfortable, like a bad sweater you wear because it looks good, but not because it is warm or comfortable or something you need.

Honestly, I didn’t need God; I knew people who needed him, but I wasn’t one of them. I found my way through life leaning on few, and that’s why I planted myself in the desert, to figure things out without all of life’s noise.

And that’s when we met.

No silly, not me and God.

Me and a medicine man.

Now, I understand God can use anyone to lead someone to Christ, but I never saw the old, Navajo guy with dirty jeans and long hair as a potential evangelist.

So when talk at the boarding school turned to skin-walkers and spirits and strange happenings inside our apartment, my roommate and I knew exactly who to go to with our questions—the big guy.

No silly, not God. We sought out the resident medicine/handy man who worked at the school.

While painting, he patiently listened as two college girls babbled tales of suspected specters and reoccurring nightmares. When we finished talking, he held his paintbrush in one hand and looked directly at me.

“Do you believe in God?”

And there it was, the big question, and the big question came from someone with no agenda; someone I didn’t know, and someone I was pretty sure didn’t care what my answer would be.

“Yes,” I replied with an unexpected certainty.

“Then you need to pray to him,” he stated, and then turned to my roommate.

He pointed his paintbrush at her.

“Do you believe in God?” he repeated.

“No,” she replied immediately.

“Then you need to get some cedar and burn it.”

And we left.

We drove to town where I promptly bought a NIV Bible, and she quickly acquired some cedar. Twelve years later, I’m pretty confident I ended up with the better purchase.

What about you? Have you ever run from God only to find Him waiting for you? Tell. Tell.

Linking up with Jen and the girls today. Hop over and join us!

Isn't it comforting to know that, even if we try to run and hide, God loves us so deeply He'll come looking? Even sending a medicine man to find you. Also good to know that God can draw others to himself through the most unlikely means--even my pathetic efforts at evangelism. Good stuff here--and it's always fun for me to make a mental visit to New Mexico--love that part of the country. And...I know what you mean about feeling itchy sometimes.

I love this too...it gives me chills...good ones:)

This is how He works...isn't it? With whomever wherever...

I never ran from God, though in a way, I did. I was running from home to different states and countries and ministry/life paths...until everything came crashing down and I came home...It's my 'Thin Place Story' though I haven't heard a thing about it since I sent it in. How long did it take for them to get back to you?

I think about where you are now versus where you were then, and it is amazing to me how much you have grown as a person in every way. You have always been someone I learn from, and you inspire me to be better. I love the way this is written :)

Run from God? Yes. So glad that He's graceful and merciful. The story that stands out in my mind right now is when I was dating someone ALL wrong for me. I had stayed away from God while I was with him because I couldn't pray to Him when I knew I was doing something wrong. Finally, I couldn't take the relationship anymore and I asked God one night, as I was going to sleep, to please help me not like this guy anymore. And, in the morning, I woke up, and all my feelings were gone. GONE. Then almost one month later, I met my husband. An incredible man of God that I almost missed.

Whoa. Chills, indeed. Amazing post; thanks!

My version of running from God was pretending, to others and myself, that I already knew Him. If you want the whole story, search for "people-pleasers" on my blog...

How beautiful. When I was 26, I quit my teaching job and enrolled in a Methodist seminary. I had no real idea why I was going, just a vision and an intuition. Shortly before leaving, I packed up all my stuff, moved it to storage, and went to Germany for two weeks to visit friends. I spent my last days overseas alone in Salzburg, Austria (I had to do The Sound of Music tour!!) I remember crying, literally, to God in a hotel room feeling so overwhelmed with everything and trying to find direction. In those few days, surrounded by the majesty of the Alps, I found peace. I let go, followed God, and my life has never been the same.

Love your storytelling!

Running from God?

I'm really more of a cover-my-eyes-and-pretend-He-can't-see-me kind of girl. No matter how many times it doesn't work, I still seem to try again.

Did you ever run again?

Awesome story Amy! I'd say you got the better purchase too! How did her purchase work out?

You just never know what vessel God will use. I love it when it's the unexpected. It makes it so God, not us.

What a fabulous salvation story! I have a little faith-decision envy!

I love that the medicine man didn't push anything on you. Christians tend to be vehement about their views, but they are unable to try to understand the other person's perspective.

Oh my gosh, I love this story. I want to go live on a reservation! But I think my opportunity has passed :) Thank you for sharing this. You made me laugh, and gave me some great things to think about. It really is that simple, isn't it. "Do you believe in God?" - and then take it from there.

That is YOUR story and it's an awesome one. I love stories that are about other people reaching out to share about Christ and the impact that has, etc. Definitely inspires me.

Suggestion: You should write more stories on your blog :)

Amy, this is brilliant story telling. I love the wisdom of the Medicine Man, and his advice for you. Isn't it funny how God pursues us in unexpected ways? Not funny, ha ha, of course. Funny, comforting.

Woo, hoo, thanks everyone for all of the encouragement. I've told this story to friends, but never written it down. It is pretty amazing how God really put everything in place.
