Water and Her View on Bad Gifts

As you know, my family and I have been working on our attitudes regarding giving, and just so everyone is completely clear on how things are going, I’d like to share the following conversation:

Me: I’m blogging with this girl, Prudence, and some other people on December 15th to raise awareness about clean water.

Husband: That sounds like a good idea.

Me: I don’t really know anything about the topic, and I wasn’t sure what to write about, but then I heard about someone choosing to go without water for a day. I thought we should do that.

Husband: Wait, do what?

Me: Not use water for a day. You know, no showers, no dishes, no cooking with water, no doing laundry. Basically, we don’t use water for a day.

Husband: Sigh. Can’t you just write about last winter when we lost power for three days, and we couldn’t even flush the toilet? I mean, I remember vividly what that was like.

Me: Um, no.

Now for more inspiration, we turn to my girl, Amelia.

As some of you know, my just-turned-eight-year-old daughter, Amelia writes for my blog, and I pay her a quarter a post. Let’s hear what my girl has to say.

Do you know what my mom bought my teacher? SHE BOUGHT HER A DUCK!!!!!!!!!!! I thought she was teseing. These are some of the other things I’d like to buy her a coffee cup stuffed animal flowers, candy and that’s all. I know that it is giving but I’d like to get her something eles. I want to give her something she likes because she is nice and I don’t think she likes ducks. Love Amelia

LOL! Maybe your daughter can inspire her teacher to like ducks, or vice versa!! Out of the mouths of babes, right? :-) You know, this is awful, but I'm not sure I could go without water for a whole day. I keep trying to think of an easier task, like putting a quarter in a jar every time I use water and donating that to Living Wells or something. But then, that's not really the point, is it? Hmmm...definitely convicted today--you go girl!! :-)

HAHA!

Great post. I'll be blogging on the 15th right along with you - although my thoughts didn't go to not using water for a whole day. But that did get me thinking.

Have a wonderful weekend. :)

This made me laugh! I couldn't use tap water for almost a week when Hurricane Ike hit and when I lived in China we used bottled water--I'd have a hard time choosing to do it when I didn't have to! Good for you! And the duck is just awesome. Someday she'll appreciate it!

ha ha, you are already embarrassing her! My mom is a teacher and has over 25 mugs from Christmas presents, I can assure you the teacher is probably fine with your choice of gift.

Yea for you and being creative with the teacher's gift.

The going without water for a day is quite a practical lesson--we would all be grumbling here; even if the hot water was removed for 24 hours.

"i don't think she likes ducks." TOO FUNNY. love it.

I'm intrigued about this water entry and the possibility of a day w/o water. If you do that, I might join you just for solidarity and to see how it impacts our life!

HA!!!!! We just went without water for almost two weeks due to an electrical problem. We were able to rig up short showers and dish-washing, but no laundry. minimal flushing. got it fixed yesterday. I felt so extravagant taking a five-minute shower this morning. we learned a lot.

PS - the APache Indian chief canceled on us due to a meeting.l we'll try again at a later date!

I laughed so hard at this post. I can just hear these conversations with both of them in my head. Too funny! I can see both of their expressions, too. So, have you gotten a thumbs up for a day without water yet? I especially like how Amelia said she thought you were teasing at first...LOL

I love you. You are fantastic in every way :)

Sara,
The quarter idea is a good one, but I think we are going for the real deal.

Mary,
Woo, hoo! Glad that you are in too! I was struggling with what I would say, but now I'm excited about the challenge.

Everyone else,
Thanks for the encouragement! Please check back on the 15th and see if we made it a whole day, and I'll have links to some of the other bloggers. How fun! I'm excited.

Hi Amy! I can't remember if I already shared this with you? It's a water purification ministry called EDGE outreach. An awesome ministry.

If that doesn't work, just go to

God's Blessings during this Christmas season!

Good luck with that water thing...will you also not be DRINKING it?

And your sweet daughter!! How funny! I recently had my 11 year old guest post for me. It was awesome. I love the way you didn't correct the errors. Classic.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today and for following, I've seen you out and about in the blog world and have even been here a few times. It's nice to finally meet you.

Blessings,
Sandy

Funny, I can picture myself having that same conversation with my husband.

So great that you are involving your daughter in this adventure. (And very clever about the quarter for a guest post!)

I have gone without water after hurricanes and it is HARD!! Good for you for doing it voluntarily!

Now...you just have to find something other than a duck! ;-)

I loved this too...esp. your husband...and yes, daughter too...oh my! it's just so funny...

You've heard of "Blood Water Mission". Jars of Clay is big at promoting it at their concerts:

Here's the link:

I'll have to check out the link up...

Thanks Kim and Abby for the links! Can't wait to check them both out. Tomorrow is my big day to go without water. Off to get a quick shower in tonight.

I LOVE that kid! :) SHE is the gift- that she is in her teacher's class, sharing her joy and love and compassion- the duck is just a bonus!
(she's just like her momma!)
PS. Should I feel guilty for agreeing with the hubs? The 5 days we endured without power last year made our family realize how blessed we are-spoiled really- and how we should not take things like clean water for granted. Thank You God for all You have given us!

At least they are honest! This one made me laugh Amy...

Wow. That's serious, Amy! Your husband made me smile. I remembered a friend who was giving her testimony at her church for a ministry--a very difficult story to tell. When she asked her husband if he would be there at both services he said, Why can't we just be the family that brings the donuts?

You go, girl! I'll check back on the 15th to see how it goes.

Laura said...

This cracks me up, Amy! I'll be coming back on the 15th to hear all about it. And I'm on my way to see Prudence.

Hi Amy! LOL. You are hilarious... just f-u-n-n-y! So much fun to visit here. I came to say it was great to get your visit last week on the jam post. I also love the "ours" post you teased us with you. Wonderful words, friend!
