Guinea Pigs, Water Tablets, and School Supplies, Oh My!

With Black Friday approaching quickly, there are some of you who may have shopping on the brain...I do, I do!

And there are some of you who have a few tough-to-buy-for recipients on the 'ol gift list...you do, you do!

What will you give the aunt who has it all? What about that sweet, neighbor lady who always returns your naughty dog? Or your child's teacher who finds a way to make everything fun?

If your Christmas purchase includes a coffee cup from Walmart with a stuffed animal tucked inside, I'm begging you to rethink! "You're a Special Teacher" Christmas tree ornament? No, no! Lotion? Nope.

So, what then?

What inexpensive gift can you give someone special? How about a duck. Yes, friends, you read that correctly, a duck. Food for the Hungry's Christmas Gift Catalog is out, and it is packed with gifts that aren't only inexpensive, but will significantly impact lives of others.

One duck is $8.00 and that one duck will produce hundreds of eggs which will not only provide food, but extra eggs can be sold to buy other needed essentials for a struggling family.

Other gift ideas?

Water Purification Tablets for a year are $15.00
Two Guinea Pigs are $15.00
Anemia treatment for a child or pregnant mom is $20.00

So if you just can't find that something special for your someone special, consider checking out the catalog over at Food for the Hungry.

Hi Amy,

Praise God for your willingness to write about ways to really make a difference this Christmas! I'm all for giving gifts like ducks. People in need matter. They need hope.

Thanks for your friendship here. I appreciate your heart.

Love, tiffany

Great idea, Amy! We got a similar catalog just the other day. Great way to emphasize what giving really means at this upcoming season.

This is a great idea. One year, one of the youth I taught at church gave me two chickens. I've never forgotten that gift! What a great way to give.

As always, you give great ideas. I'll have to hop on over to check it all out. It's so amazing how so little to us (the amount of a couple of trips to Starbucks) can literally change the lives of people elsewhere. Thanks, A.

after I read Ann's this week (did you read?--Wednesday's) I knew that this would be 'IT' for us this Christmas...we can't disallow loved ones to buy for our kids, but we can choose this as a family...and in so many ways to bless all who receive these gifts!! love it!

and love your comment on my poem today! you crack me up...a bloggy friend like some of my best non-bloggy friends...this is GOOD:):):):) and p.s. you didn't write it yet??!!

This is a great idea and means so much. Thanks for visiting my blog too. Where in Ohio are you traveling to? I live in the very NW corner.

Haha Amy-you forgot to add the no candles to the gifts for teachers list too!! Okay, the snarky part of me is back in it's cage now. I love the idea- my boys and I always pick a family gift from the Samaritan's Purse catalogue and I gave the girls in my small group a homemade treat and a donation to buy milk for hungry babies. Thanks for sharing this idea and your heart Amy.

Amy, last year my hubby and I gave our boys a budget ($50) and sent them to their room to come up with a list of what they wanted to buy from that very catalog. It was so neat to see them get excited about giving, instead of just getting! :) Thanks for faithfully encouraging us busy moms to take time to impart the spirit of service to our kids. I hope you're planning on writing a book...I'd love to read it someday!

Oh Dena Dyer,
Thank you for the encouragement...your kind words come at the perfect time! I am writing a book, and I hope that someone reads it one day:). Oh, and I miss all the action over at HCB. Ever since the summer (and most of my free time!) ended I haven't frequented as much. I SO enjoy visits from you and some of my other faves over that way...Laura B, and Jennifer.

What a great idea! You know what else? When I was teaching I LOVED getting notes or cards from students (and even parents) with genuine hand-written messages. I love the information age as much as anyone else, but there is something nice about hand-written cards.

Carla,
Me too, me too. I know the exact number of special notes I've received from parents over the years. They are very special!
